The management of Lafarge Africa Plc, led by its CEO, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, paid a courtesy visit to the Olowu of Owu, His Royal Majesty Oba Prof. Saka Adelola Matemilola, at the Owu Palace.
The visit aimed to engage with the monarch, tap into his wisdom, and discuss the company’s relationship with the host communities. However, the Olowu did not hold back in emphasizing the importance of mutual benefits between investors and local communities.
Oba Matemilola pointed out that communities exist for development, and investors are drawn to them not out of mere interest but because of valuable resources available. He stressed that while Lafarge’s business is thriving, the real question remains: How is the Owu community benefiting?
The monarch further highlighted environmental concerns tied to Lafarge’s operations and referenced an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the company and Owu communities across Ewekoro, Papa, and other areas. He insisted that a clearer framework must be established to ensure a fair balance between business interests and community welfare.
In response, Lafarge’s CEO, Alade-Akinyemi, acknowledged the monarch’s concerns, stating that the company has a Community Relations Committee responsible for corporate social responsibility (CSR). He outlined the company’s CSR efforts, including projects in healthcare, education, and the provision of basic amenities like pipe-borne water, books etc. He commended the Olowu’s transparency and commitment to community development.
To foster better understanding, the Olowu requested Lafarge to send representatives on March 11 for a follow-up meeting involving community heads. He noted that many local leaders remain unaware of key developments and emphasized that lasting solutions can only be achieved through open dialogue.
The meeting marks a crucial step in strengthening ties between Lafarge Africa Plc and Owu communities, setting the stage for improved collaboration and sustainable development.
